Management Development one Step at a Time
|
This
management development article combines research with my own
thinking. I hope you find it interesting and useful.
Whereas we need organisational structure, a
degree of discipline, systems and procedures, these are there to help the individual,
and the organisation, achieve developmental goals. They should not hinder the
management development efforts needed to take the organisation forward. By all
means be visionary and ambitious but remember that the best way to eat an elephant
is one slice at a time. Therefore set a goal, achieve it, apply the benefits,
reflect upon the experience and seek the next management development challenge.
This usually means setting up individual management development modularised learning
units. Such learning units should be linked to discrete organisational missions,
with business targets. Each management development learning unit can second key
organisational players to enrich debate and creativity thinking to promote understanding
and secure commitment in knowledge application. Remember therefore that the organisational
value of self development is often based upon its impact when knowledge is applied
within work. Value can be significantly improved if self contained organisational
business units or project teams are established to manage change and management
development improvement missions.
